The leaves of the baobabs are dropped during the dry season. They appear again in the rain season. Baobabs are very drought tolerant and store water in the thick trunks. During the dry season the trees use the green layer below the bark for photosynthesis (13, 16).
Formation of the Leaves
At the start of the rain season the leaves are 2-3-foliate. Later than 5-,7- or 9-foliate (16). Leaflets have a great variation in size, some mature leaves reach a diameter of 20 cm (13).
Young trees have simple leaves (13).
